Playoff Recap: Bates Loses Heartbreaker in Finals 6-5

Bates took the number one overall seed into the championship game, their first appearance in this game since 2011. Matt Mosca'14 played notably well in net, yet the Bobcats fell to Sacred Heart University by a score of 6-5.

Bates jumped out to an early 3-0 with goals coming from Jake Bergeron '16 , Sean Thomas '14 , and a power play tip in by Ty Silvey '14 . Sacred Heart was able to score a late goal in the first to bring the game to a 3-1 score.

The second period got off to a rough start for the Bobcats. The refs called four different penalties in the first three minutes, giving Sacred Heart a 5-3 for over a minute and a half, and Bates escaped by only allowing one power play goal. The lead evaporated to only a one goal difference, but the team was still positive about the consistent penalty killing. Sacred Heart then scored on an odd man rush to tie the game at 3 heading into the 3rd.

The third period was filled with back and forth hockey. Brad Rutkin '17 got Bates going in the third period, scoring on the first shift. Sacred Heart responded with two quick goals to make the game 5-4, but Rutkin responded again with his second of the game to tie the game up. Coach Leblond said in response, "He really stepped up for us. He got a chance to play on the first unit, and he made the most of his chances and really got everyone. It is rare to see a freshman step up like that on such a big stage but Bradley was able to do it." An unfortunate turnover gave Sacred Heart a 6-5 lead with 4 minutes to go, and Bates was unable to score in the final minutes.

Despite the loss, the Bobcats took home two pieces of hardware as the Regular Season Champions and the Playoff Finalists. This team finished with an overall record of 12-3-2 on the year, marking one of the most successful seasons in recent memory.

Following the game, senior captain Chris DeBrase said, "This was one of the most devastating moments of my hockey career. We achieved a lot this season, and I feel like we had the right pieces to win this whole thing. It only hurts so much because we got so far. While I am upset that we were not able to win, I am more upset that it is over. This was one of the most fun teams to be around, and I won't forget how much we accomplished this year."
