Bobcats claw back for an OT victory over UMaine

Bates opened their season in fine fashion on Sunday, November 8 in Orono, ME. The Bobcats faced off against the University of Maine in Alfond Arena to open the 2009-2010 hockey season. The Bobcats and Black Bears took a scoreless game into the second period before UMaine was able to break the game open. The Black Bears struck three times in the second period and took a 3-0 lead into the final period of regulation.

UMaine extended their lead to 4-0 with a goal early in the third period before Bates woke up as brothers Wes '10 and Cam '12 Chaput lead the charge. Wes Chaput '10 was the first to find the back of the net on a rebound from a Dan Roop '10 slapshot from the point to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard with just 8:04 remaining in regulation. First-year Charley Stern '13 cut the deficit to two with his first career goal in his Bobcat debut. Last year's league leading goal scorer, Wes Chaput '10, wrote his name onto the score sheet 21 seconds later with the help of a Miles Davee '11 pass to bring Bates within striking distance, and once more to complete the hat trick as he finished the comeback. After four unanswered goals in just 4 minutes and 49 seconds by the Bobcats to tie the game at 4-4, Bates and UMaine required overtime to decide a winner.

Bates didn't waste any time finishing the job in overtime as Cam Chaput '12 scored just 32 seconds into the extra session on a feed from Wes Chaput '10 to give both brothers a four point evening. Joe Doody '11 (1-0) started in net for Bates to record the victory.
