Six different Bobcats score in 6-2 victory over UMaine

Stellar play from freshman netminder Joe Dell'Erario '13 propelled the Bobcats to an easy non-league win over the 9th ranked University of Maine Black Bears on Sunday, January 24.

A five-goal second period and goals coming from six different players proved to be plenty of offense as Bates won convincingly.

Andrew Berry '13 opened the scoring for Bates and accounted for the only goal in the first period of play for either team with helpers from Sam Boyer '10 and Cam Chaput '12.

In the second period, the floodgates opened for Bates as the Bobcats scored five times to open up the game and put it out of reach. Matt Ohlheiser '11 streaked down the left flank 4:39 into the 2nd period on a 2-on-1 with Wes Chaput '10 and kept the puck, firing a wrist shot on the short side to score his first goal of the season.

Just 1:28 later, Miles Davee '11 delivered a beautiful pass to the backdoor that provided a layup for Cam Chaput '12 who made no mistake in scoring his 6th goal of the season.

The Black Bears answered minutes after the midway point of the game to close to gap to 3-1, but Bates regained control of the game and two quick answers made it clear the afternoon belonged to Bates.

Wes Chaput scored his team-leading 16th goal of the year with assists from defensemen Jared Quenzel '13 and Billy Kenny '10. The assist was Quenzel's first career point as a Bobcat. Forty-three seconds later, Kenny led the rush up ice and scored a goal himself, his first of the season.

Davee put the finishing touches on the Black Bears with a rebound goal late in the second period to make the score 6-1. Kyle Aulet '12 asissted on the goal, notching his first point for Bates.

UMaine managed to find the net once more in the third period to cut the score to 6-2, but that would be all Dell'Erario (3-1, 4.02 GAA) would allow. The freshman goaltender recorded 32 saves on 34 shots for an impressive .941 save percentage.

The Bobcats and Black Bears will not meet again this season. Bates won both games against UMaine this year, winning 5-4 in overtime to open the season in Orono and most recently 6-2 at Underhill Arena.
